Thistledown Hosts Winningest Horse In North America
Billy Hays' Blue Cherries Spin became the winningest horse in North America this year following his rail-skimming victory at Thistledown on Monday. The four-year-old chestnut gelding, trained by Joe Woodard and ridden by Yuri Yaranga, was winning for the seventh time in 10 starts in 2009.
According to Equibase Company, thoroughbred racing's official record keeper, Blue Cherries Spin had been tied with six other horses with six wins. Blue Cherries Spin, who has earned $62,855, has won over five different tracks this season. Three of his scores came at Turfway Park in northern Kentucky, and one each at Mountaineer Park, Indiana Downs, River Downs, and Thistledown.
Meisterwerk, who won at Thistledown on May 15, is one of the horses with six wins. Donamour, who also won at Thistledown on Monday, and Maui Sunset, who has won at Thistledown this season, both have five victories.
